Overview

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are heterogeneous membrane-bound structures released by cells. The term exosome relates to biogenesis; not every small EV can be assumed to be an exosome.

02

Biological mechanism

EVs may carry proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Their effects depend on cell source, EV population, cargo and recipient cells.

03

Preclinical evidence

Cellular and animal studies explore biomarker and delivery applications. Findings are sensitive to isolation and characterization methods.

04

Human studies

Human studies are underway, but safety and efficacy cannot be generalized across therapeutic EV approaches. FDA states that no exosome products are approved for treating diseases.

05

Limitations & safety

MISEV2023 emphasizes characterization; product purity, potency, reproducibility, dosing and regulatory status require careful evaluation.
