Signalling pathways, molecular targets and investigational peptides.
Editorial review: November 2026Peptides are not a single clinical category: approved peptide medicines and experimental peptides have very different evidence bases. Each molecule, route and indication must be evaluated individually.
Specific peptides can affect receptors, enzymes or signalling pathways. A plausible mechanism does not establish therapeutic benefit.
Mechanistic studies use cellular and animal models and are sensitive to dose, pharmacokinetics and model selection.
Some peptide-based medicines are established for specific indications, while numerous popular research peptides have little or inadequate human efficacy and safety data.
Purity, aggregation, immunogenicity, route of administration, manufacturing quality and applicable regulation matter. FDA has published safety concerns for certain substances.
